Ten points is realistic for most people sitting in SkillSelect right now. Twenty for a smaller group. Thirty means your problem is your pathway, not your score — start with our General Skilled Migration guide or the PR pathway roadmap.

Below is every legitimate way to increase points for Australian PR, ranked by cost per point, with every figure traced to the Home Affairs points table. We do not sell Professional Year places, NAATI coaching or English courses, so we have no reason to push you toward any lever here.

Every Lever, in One Table

Costs are indicative. The accounting Professional Year is absent because it no longer exists.

Read that last column first. An ICT Professional Year buys the same five points as a NAATI CCL test for eight times the money and most of a year. In engineering, wider still.

Start Free: Study Points You Have Already Earned

Australian study requirement, +5. 92 weeks of CRICOS-registered course over at least 16 calendar months, taught in English, undertaken in Australia on a visa that authorised study.

Regional study, +5. Four conditions, all of them: you met the Australian study requirement; your campus sat in a designated regional area; you lived in one while studying; and no part of the course was distance education. Regional means everywhere but Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane — Perth, Adelaide, the Gold Coast, Hobart and Canberra all count, under the current instrument.

Verdict: check both today. We regularly meet applicants who studied in Adelaide, claimed the study points, missed the regional five, and sat five points short for a year.

The Fastest Paid Points: English

Competent to Proficient, +10. Proficient English is 7.0 in every band of IELTS. For tests sat from 7 August 2025, PTE Academic is no longer one flat number: 58 listening, 59 reading, 69 writing, 76 speaking. Anyone still quoting “PTE 65 across the board” is using pre-August 2025 figures.

Proficient to Superior, +10 more. Superior English is IELTS 8.0 in every band, or PTE 69/70/85/88. Every band. Applicants routinely score 8.5 in three modules and 7.5 in writing, then spend four months chasing that one number.

Verdict on Proficient: do this first — roughly $70 per point, landing in weeks. Our English requirement guide and IELTS scores for PR set out what each band buys.

Verdict on Superior: judge honestly. Worst band 7.5, go. Worst band 6.5, those months buy more elsewhere. Note that results from tests sat on or before 6 August 2025 stay usable until 6 August 2028, against the old thresholds.

NAATI CCL: Five Points for About $1,000

How many points is NAATI CCL worth?

Five, through the credentialled community language claim. NAATI runs the CCL test in more than 50 languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Mandarin, Urdu, Nepali, Filipino, Vietnamese, Arabic, Persian and Spanish.

About 20 minutes: two recorded dialogues of roughly 300 words, interpreted between English and your language. Each is marked out of 45, and you need 63 out of 90 overall and at least 29 in each dialogue — that second condition is the one candidates miss.

How long does NAATI CCL take?

Two to four months. The fee is $814 for 2026–27 and results arrive in four to six weeks. Slots fill fast in the major cities, so book the test before the prep course — the slot is the constraint.

Verdict: do this if you speak an eligible language. Roughly $240 per point including preparation, and five points frequently closes exactly the gap. The failure rate is real, so prepare rather than walking in cold.

Partner Points: The Lever Most Couples Miss

How many points do I get for my partner’s skills?

• 10 points — your partner is under 45, holds Competent English, and has a positive skills assessment in an occupation on the list you are applying under.
• 5 points — your partner holds Competent English but no skills assessment. There is no age limit on this one, and no assessment required.
• 10 points — you have no spouse or de facto partner, or your partner already holds Australian permanent residency or citizenship.

The first two require your partner to be an applicant on the same visa. The third catches people out: single applicants claim the ten automatically, and so do applicants whose partner is already a PR. The skills route takes two to four months, running on the assessing authority’s timetable rather than yours.

Verdict: check this before you spend money anywhere else. Ten points for around $1,400 is the second-cheapest paid lever, and half the couples we assess had never looked into it.

Professional Year: Read This Before You Enrol

Is a Professional Year worth it for PR?

Two programs still run: 

• ICT, accredited by the Australian Computer Society — roughly $8,000 to $10,000, or about $1,800 per point.
• Engineering, through Engineering Education Australia — $15,200 to $15,500 plus a $350 application fee, or about $3,100 per point.

Both run 32 weeks of coursework plus a 12-week internship. The points item requires at least 12 months completed within the 48 months before your invitation — see our Professional Year guide.

Verdict: narrow. It earns its place when you are an onshore graduate with no other route, you want the local experience, and your 485 has time left. It rarely does when NAATI CCL, partner points or an English upgrade is open — each costs a fraction and lands sooner. Providers will tell you it is essential. Check your other levers first.

Specialist Educational Qualification, +10

A masters by research or a doctorate from an Australian institution, including at least two academic years of study in Australia, in a specified field: natural and physical sciences, information technology, or engineering. ICT counts, and so does biotechnology. A masters by coursework does not.

Verdict: only if you wanted the degree anyway. Nobody should enrol in a research masters to chase ten points — but if you are already weighing postgraduate study, the points are a real bonus.

Experience Points Arrive; Age Points Leave

Skilled employment runs on two scales, and most articles print only one.

Australian experience scores faster and reaches higher: one year onshore matches three years overseas.

Both count only paid work of 20+ hours a week, in your nominated or a closely related occupation, within the 10 years before your invitation. Combined, they cap at 20 — you cannot stack the scales to 35.

Age points move the other way. They drop from 30 to 25 when you turn 33, and from 25 to 15 when you turn 40. At 45 you lose eligibility entirely, measured on the date of your invitation.

Run the net position before you wait. An applicant at 32 who gains an experience band in eight months and loses an age band in ten ends the year where they started. Waiting is a strategy only when the arithmetic works.

The +5 and +15 Almost Nobody Counts

State nomination is a points lever, and the largest one available to most applicants. A 190 nomination adds 5 points and delivers permanent residency on grant. A 491 nomination adds 15 and holds you provisional and regional until the 191.

Fifteen points costs a nomination fee — nothing else here comes close. The trade-off is geographic, not financial. See which states want which occupations: priority occupations, NSW, Victoria, state allocations.

Which Lever Should You Pick?

• Single onshore graduate, 5 short. Regional study points if you studied outside a major city, then NAATI CCL. Leave a Professional Year until both are ruled out.
• Married professional, 10 short. Partner points first, every time.
• Offshore applicant, 10 short. English upgrade, then NAATI CCL. Both work from anywhere, and partner points travel too.
• Accountant, any gap. Your Professional Year route is closed, and accounting was not invited in either of the last two 189 rounds. This is a pathway conversation, not a points one.
• ICT professional, any gap. Same position — see our visa pathways for IT professionals. Points still matter for a 190 or 491.
• Turning 45 within the year. Stop reading and book a call. Your deadline outranks your strategy.

Updating Your EOI Without Hurting Yourself

Can I update my EOI after I submit it?

Yes — at any time before you receive an invitation, and you must update it when your circumstances change.

Does updating my EOI change my date of effect?

Your date of effect is the date you reached your current score. Adding points gives the new score its own date of effect from the day you claim it.

This matters less than applicants fear. Home Affairs ranks by points first, date of effect second — so 85 to 90 puts you above every 85-point applicant however long they have waited. Your fresh date only competes against others on 90.

The rule cuts the other way when points fall. Crossing an age band, letting a skills assessment lapse or losing partner points drops your score — and the lower score carries a new date of effect too. That is the scenario to plan around.

Every point must be provable at invitation. A claim you cannot evidence becomes a refusal months later, after you have paid the charge — read how refusals and cancellations happen, and what counts as a bogus document.
