Visa 482 – Temporary Skill Shortage Visa

This visa allows the eligible employers to sponsor the overseas skilled workers to live and work in Australia temporarily on a condition that if the employer is not able to find the right talent in Australia on the nominated positions.

Visa 482 – Short-Term Stream

This visa stream allows eligible employers to sponsor and nominate the overseas skilled workers with a relevant occupation listed on Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL). The nominated employee can live and work in Australia for up to 2 years or up to 4 years if the International Trade Obligation applies.

Processing Time

The Department of Home Affairs decides on all Temporary Skill Shortage Visa applications. It generally processes:

  • 25% of applications within 36 days
  • 50% of applications within 53 days
  • 75% of applications within 5 months
  • 90% of applications within 14 months

Eligibility

To apply and be eligible for a Temporary Skill Shortage Visa,  you must:

  • Have a nomination to work in a specific occupation available on the eligible short-term skilled occupations list
  • Have a minimum of two years‘ experience in the profession you have chosen
  • Have a positive skills assessment for your occupation only if required
  • Work only for your sponsor or associated firm unless you’re exempt
  • Meet the minimum criteria for English language proficiency
  • Meet the health and character requirements
  • Be a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE)
  • Not owe the Australian government any money, or you must have arranged to pay all debts back.
  • Sign the Australian Values Statement to confirm that you’ll respect Australian laws and their way of living.
  • Not have had a visa canceled before

A Temporary Skill Shortage Visa 482 costs AUD 1,290 for main applicants. This visa fee is also for the dependents who’re 18 years of age or above. If a dependent is under 18 years old, they’ll pay AUD 325 for visa 482. Applicants might also have to pay for biometrics, English language tests, and health checks.

Stay Period

Visa 482 is a temporary visa. You can stay for more than 2 years in Australia. Hong Kong passport holders can live for up to 5 years. While if an International Trade Obligation (ITO) applies, you can stay for 4 years in Australia.

This visa stream allows eligible employers to sponsor and nominate the overseas skilled workers with a relevant occupation listed either on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) or on the Regional Occupation List (ROL). The nominated employee can live and work in Australia for up to 4 years.

Processing Time

The Department of Home Affairs processes applications for a 482 medium-term stream on a case-by-case basis. It generally takes:

  • 33 days to process 25% of applications
  • 49 days to process 50% of applications
  • 3 months to finalize 75% of applications
  • 7 months to process 90% of applications

Eligibility

If you want to be eligible for a 482 medium-term stream in Australia, you must:

  • Have been nominated to work in a specific occupation listed on the eligible medium and long-term skilled occupations list
  • Have a 2 years of work experience in your nominated occupation
  • Provide a positive skills assessment for your occupation only if it’s required
  • Work either for your sponsor or associated firm in Australia unless you’re exempt.
  • Meet the minimum level of English proficiency unless you are exempt from it.

  • 25% of applications within 36 days
  • 50% of applications within 46 days
  • 75% of applications within 71 days
  • 90% of applications within 6 months

Eligibility

If you want to be eligible for a Labour Agreement Stream 482, you must:

  • Be employed under a labour agreement
  • Have work experience of at least 2 years in your nominated occupation
  • Have a relevant skills assessment if it’s required by Home Affairs
  • Work only for your sponsor in Australia
  • Fulfill the minimum requirements for English language proficiency
  • Be nominated
  • Meet the health and character requirements
  • Have adequate health insurance for your whole stay period in Australia

Can I change employer on 482 visa?

Yes, you can change your employer while holding a TSS Visa 482. For this, your new employer must sponsor you as well as to lodge a nomination for you. A nomination application lodged by your proposed employer must be approved. You won’t be able to work for your new employer if a favorable decision isn’t made on a new nomination.

Can I get Medicare on a 482 visa?

No, your health expenses will not be covered by Medicare unless your home country has a mutual health care agreement with Australia. If you’re a TSS 482 Visa holder, you must have enough resources to bear your health expenses in Australia. You must have adequate health insurance for your stay period.

How to convert 482 visa to PR?
