Ask almost anyone in skilled migration how long a skills assessment lasts, and you will hear the same answer. Three years.
Here is the problem with that answer. The three-year figure is real, but it belongs to the Department of Home Affairs rather than to the authority that assessed you. ACS, AITSL and ANMAC only give you two, and between them they cover ICT, school teaching, nursing and midwifery. That is a large share of everyone in the skilled program, so for most people reading this, two years is the number that matters.
Which means that if one of those three assessed you and you have been counting on three years, your skill assessment validity runs out a full year before you expect it to. Nobody writes to tell you when that happens, either.
Here is what each authority actually gives you, and what to do if your date has already passed.
The Three-Year Rule Is a Ceiling and Not a Promise
Home Affairs sets an outer limit. It will not accept a skills assessment that is more than three years old at the time of invitation, and it applies that rule to every points-tested skilled visa.
Your assessing authority sets its own period inside that limit. Home Affairs names the authority for each occupation, and our list of assessing authorities in Australia maps them to the occupations they cover. Nothing stops an authority from giving you less than three years, and several of the busiest ones do.
So two clocks run on your application. The Home Affairs clock caps you at three years. Your authority’s clock is the one printed on your outcome letter. Whichever expires first is your real deadline.
The three-year figure people repeat is the ceiling. It was never a guarantee.
How Long Is a Skill Assessment Valid For in Australia
The table below sets out each authority and the period it publishes.
| Assessing authority | Who it assesses | Validity | Can you renew it |
| ACS | ICT occupations | 2 years from date of issue | No. ACS does not support outcome renewals or reassessments, though it does run an appeal process for a decision you believe is wrong |
| AITSL | Teachers | 2 years from date of issue | No renewal service. You apply again |
| ANMAC | Nurses and midwives | 2 years from date of issue | No renewal, but an update service exists. It changes details, not the expiry date |
| ACECQA | Early childhood teachers | Confirm on your outcome letter | Took over ANZSCO 241111 from AITSL on 7 December 2024. AITSL letters issued before then stay valid to their own expiry |
| VETASSESS | Professional, general and trade occupations | Usually 3 years from issue date | Yes, but only before it expires |
| Engineers Australia | Engineering occupations | No expiry printed on the letter. The three-year Home Affairs ceiling still applies | Yes, through the updated outcome letter service |
| TRA | Trades | 3 years from date of issue | No. You apply again |
| CPA Australia | Accounting and finance | 3 years from the date of your first outcome | No. Later add-ons do not reset the date |
| CA ANZ | Accounting and finance | 3 years from issue date | No. You apply again |
| IPA | Accounting and finance | 3 years from date of assessment | No. You apply again |
Periods as published by each authority, checked 18 September 2026. Confirm against your own outcome letter.
Two years applies to ICT, school teaching and nursing. Three years applies to the rest of the authorities in this table. That single difference catches out more people than any other technicality in the points system.

One caution about the table. Home Affairs recognises around forty assessing authorities, and the nine above are simply the ones most applicants deal with. If yours is not listed, read the period off your own outcome letter rather than assuming three years. Our list of assessing authorities in Australia covers the rest, and our guide to choosing the right assessing authority covers the decision before the clock starts.
Early childhood teachers need to read their letter with particular care. ACECQA replaced AITSL as the assessing authority for Early Childhood (Pre-primary School) Teacher on 7 December 2024. An AITSL letter issued before that date stays valid until its own expiry, so plenty of people are holding one, and our guide to early childhood teaching in Australia covers the pathway.
Does Skills Assessment Expire Differently Depending on Who Assessed You
Yes, and the renewal rules differ more than the validity periods do. There are really four regimes rather than the three most guides describe.
VETASSESS lets you renew, but the door closes on the expiry date
Apply before it expires, and VETASSESS reassesses your original outcome along with any new qualifications or employment. The skill assessment renewal fee is AUD 544.50 including GST inside Australia and AUD 495.00 excluding GST outside Australia, and renewals usually take two to five weeks, depending on the current VETASSESS processing times. Miss the date, and there is nothing to renew, so you lodge a full new application and pay the full fee. Our guide to the VETASSESS application process covers the original application.
ANMAC does not renew, but it does update
This one is widely misreported in both directions. ANMAC runs an update your outcome letter service for AUD 145, which lets you add qualifications, add work experience, change your ANZSCO code, or correct an error.
| An ANMAC update does not move your expiry date
The updated letter still runs from your original assessment date. You also need at least three months of validity remaining to apply, and ANMAC allows a maximum of two updates per outcome letter. So the service is worth knowing about, because AUD 145 beats a full reassessment when your ANZSCO code is wrong. It is not a way to buy more time, and nurses who read it as one lose months. Our guide to the ANMAC skill assessment for nurses covers the underlying application. |
ACS does not renew at all
People search for how to renew ACS skill assessment constantly, and the honest answer is that there is no renewal to apply for. ACS states plainly that it does not currently support outcome reassessments or outcome renewals. When your two years are up, you start a fresh application. ACS does run an appeal process for an outcome you believe is wrong, and it refunds the appeal fee if the decision is overturned, but that addresses a bad assessment rather than an expired one. Worth knowing before you plan around it, because ACS also updates its assessment criteria over time, so a second application is not guaranteed to land where the first one did. Our guide to the ACS migration skill assessment sets out the current requirements.
Engineers Australia sits outside all of them
An EA outcome letter carries no expiry date of its own, which is why EA skill assessment validity confuses people. The Home Affairs three-year limit still governs, and Engineers Australia offers an updated outcome letter service for assessments issued more than three years ago. Our tips for the Engineers Australia skill assessment cover what the original application asks for.
For the rest, including TRA skills assessment and all three accounting bodies, expiry means a new application. If your cpa skill assessment expired, note that CPA Australia measures three years from your very first outcome. Adding a second ANZSCO code or a skilled employment assessment later does not push that date back.

Your Assessment Has to Be Valid at Invitation and Not at Lodgement
The second belief worth correcting is about timing rather than length.
You do need to hold an assessment to submit an Expression of Interest at all, because SkillSelect asks for the assessing authority, the date, and the reference number. What it does not have to be is unexpired on that day. It does not have to be unexpired on the day you lodge the visa application either. For a points-tested visa, the moment that counts is the invitation.
That cuts both ways. An assessment that expires the week after you submit your EOI is not a problem in itself, because an EOI is not an application. An assessment that expires the week before your invitation arrives is a serious problem, because you were never validly invited on those claims.
| This rule is for points-tested visas only
The invitation test applies to the 189, the 190 and the 491, because those are the visas you are invited to apply for. Employer-sponsored visas work differently. The subclass 186 Direct Entry stream has no invitation stage, so the assessment has to be valid when you lodge. If it states a validity period, that period must still be running on the day you apply, and otherwise it cannot be more than three years old. One further trap catches 485 holders: an assessment obtained for a 485 cannot be reused for a 186. Do not carry the invitation rule across from one visa to the other. |
It also means the arithmetic is simple. Look at your expiry date, then look at how your occupation has been performing in recent invitation rounds, against the official round results. If there is no realistic prospect of an invitation before your date, renewing or reapplying now is cheaper than losing a round.

If Your Skill Assessment Expired Before the Invitation Arrived
This is the part almost nobody publishes, and it is genuinely good news.
Until 2021, the assumption was that your assessment had to be valid on the exact date the invitation was issued. Expire on the Monday, get invited on the Tuesday, and you were finished.
Then the Federal Circuit Court decided Thapa v Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs [2021] FCCA 686. The applicant received an invitation in December 2018 holding an assessment that had already expired. He obtained a new one within the sixty-day window and lodged. The Department refused him on the basis that the assessment was not valid at the time of invitation.
The court disagreed, and the reasoning turned on two words. The legislation says time of invitation, not date of invitation. The court read time of invitation as covering the whole sixty-day period you are given to lodge, rather than a single calendar day, on the basis that clearer words would be needed to confine it to one date.
The practical effect is this. If your skill assessment expired before invitation, obtaining a valid assessment inside those sixty days can still put you in a position to lodge.
Two cautions apply here, and they matter.
- Sixty days is not long. ACS, AITSL and ANMAC processing times can eat most of it, and none of them will fast-track you because a visa deadline is approaching.
- This is a litigated interpretation applied case by case, not a published concession you can simply rely on. Practitioners report the Department accepting assessments obtained within the sixty days since the decision, but we could find no published departmental policy saying so, and an approach that rests on reported practice is not the same as one that rests on a rule. How it applies to you depends on your dates, your authority and what the Department already has on file.
If you are in this position, this is the point to get advice rather than to lodge and hope. A refusal here is expensive, and it is not always fixable.

What to Do This Week If You Are Waiting on an Invitation
Three things, and none of them take long.
- Find the issue date on your outcome letter. Use the date of issue printed on the letter itself, not the date you applied and not the date the email arrived.
- Add your authority’s period from the table above. That date, or three years from issue, whichever comes first, is your real deadline. Put it in your calendar with a reminder ninety days out.
- Decide whether to act now or wait. If your occupation is being invited and your score is competitive, waiting is reasonable. If it has not been invited in recent rounds, your assessment will expire before anything happens, and renewing later costs the same money for a later start.
While you are looking at dates, check whether your points have moved. Our points calculator gives you a current baseline, the General Skilled Migration overview shows how the 189, 190 and 491 pathways connect, and our read on how hard the 189 actually is sets out the odds before you commit to waiting.
STYLE EXPERIMENT APPLIED
Experiment: structure archetype, myth-busting. Variable 3 from the test menu.
Every section opens with the belief the reader arrives holding, states it fairly, then corrects it. The correction is the content rather than a footnote, which is only possible because a genuinely wrong number is in wide circulation on this topic.
Why it suits this title. The reader is not looking for information, they think they already have it. A reference-style article gives someone who believes the answer is three years no reason to read. Naming the contradiction in the headline is the only thing that gets that reader to check their own outcome letter, which is the action the whole article wants.
Metric to watch. Scroll to 75 per cent and enquiries per 1,000 sessions, measured against the Q&A piece on the 485 as the control. Both target readers with a deadline, so topic urgency is roughly matched.
Check the Date Before It Checks You
Most people who lose an invitation to an expired assessment were not careless. A website quoting the wrong clock told them three years.
Send us your outcome letter, your occupation, and your current points score. Our MARA-registered agents will tell you your real expiry date, whether renewing or reapplying is the better move, and whether your occupation is likely to be invited before that date arrives.
