new work and holiday visa 462

Work and Holiday Visa 462 for Indians | Pre-Application Ballot System

Good news!

The Australia Government has announced a new work and holiday visa 462 for Indians.

This means, from now on, Indian nationals are eligible to apply for a new Work and Holiday visa 462 as per new amendments.

Starting from 16 September 2024, the Australian government will open more opportunities for Indian citizens. Under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), around 1,000 Indian nationals can apply for a Work and Holiday 462 visa annually. This means that Indian passport holders are now eligible for 462 visas within updated conditions set by the Government of Australia.

Due to high demand, Indian applicants will register themselves through a new ballot system for the first time in history, starting in the 2024–25 program years. The Work and Holiday Visa (subclass 462) is designed for young adults who want to travel and work in Australia for up to 12 months. This visa will allow them to experience Australian culture while supplementing their travel funds through short-term employment.

Before moving forward, let’s take a look at the key updates of its amendment.

Key Points in Amendment of Work and Holiday Subclass 462 Visa

  • Indian citizens are now eligible to apply for the Subclass 462 visa.
  • Indian applicants do not need to provide evidence of support from the Indian government for 462 visa applications.
  • Applicants are required to complete 2 years of postsecondary education to qualify.

This significant change is a part of the Migration Amendment (Arrangements for Work and Holiday (subclass 462 visa applications)) Instruments (LIN 24/059) that has been taken to strengthen the ties between two countries, Australia and India. It also aims to offer better opportunities for cultural and trade exchange.

Changes in New Work and Holiday Visa 462

Some noteworthy legislative changes have been made to the visa 462 application process to smoothen the process for Indian applicants. These changes will help simplify and streamline the steps involved in 462 visa processing and ensure a more efficient experience for the applicants.

Eligibility for Indian Passport Holders

People withholding Indian passports will be eligible to apply for 462 work and holiday visas in Australia. Previously, Indian citizens were not allowed to participate in these programs. However, this amendment is a major change in Australia’s visa policies towards India.

Exemption from Indian Government Support

After this amendment, Indian applicants do not need to provide evidence of support from the Indian government. This significant change will help to simplify the 462 visa application process.

Pre-Application Process Ballot System

Australia has introduced a pre-application process known as the ballot system, which is available for India, Vietnam, and China. Only those applicants who will be selected in the pre-application ballot can proceed to submit their formal 462 visa application. This application process started on 16 September 2024.

Educational Qualification of Indian Applicants

As per the amendment, Indian applicants are required to meet certain education qualifications (written in paragraph 462.221(c) of Schedule 2 of the Migration Regulations).  The amendment outlines the qualifications in complete detail. Applicants must meet similar standards.

Ballot Fee

A $25 ballot fee is required to enter the ballot application. However, submitting a pre-application and being selected from the ballot does not guarantee visa approval.

What is the Ballot or Pre-application system in Australia?

Australia will implement a new ballot system for work and holiday visas starting in September 2024 for the 2024-25 program year for high-demand countries. This new pre-application system aims to attract people by allowing them to work and holiday in Australia while also trying to shorten the application process.

Australia’s ballot system is a random selection procedure that guarantees a fair and transparent process. This will help the Australian government handle many applications for a limited number of visa slots.
