Two people can sit through this qualification in the same room, walk out with the same code printed on the same certificate, and still be assessed as different occupations, because the elective units they chose decide which one they are. That is the expensive mistake to make with MEM30219 Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade. The first problem, though, is simply finding a provider who will enrol an international student, because most of them will not.

What MEM30219 Covers

MEM30219 is the current code, and training.gov.au lists it as nationally recognised training. What it does not have is a fixed number of units, which is the first thing most guides get wrong about it.

One thing worth clearing up before you go any further is the naming. The official title is Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade with a dash, while providers drop the dash, shorten it to Cert III in Engineering Mechanical Trade, or write Certificate 3 in Engineering Mechanical Trade with a numeral. Your search results will show you all of these, and they are the same qualification under the same code.

Those elective groups are the part that matters, because they are what splits one qualification into several different trades. Fitting units point you to mechanical fitter, machining units to metal machinist, and fitting combined with welding to fitter-welder. Your assessing authority judges you on the units you actually completed rather than on the title printed on your certificate. That is why the elective list is the first thing to ask any provider for, in writing, before you pay a deposit.

MEM30219 supersedes MEM30205, and the Release 1 document records that it supersedes and is equivalent to it. If you find an older document listing MEM30205 against your occupation, that is the previous version of the same cert 3 engineering mechanical trade qualification rather than a different one. Government schedules update slowly, and several still name the old code.

Why Most Providers Will Not Enrol You

Look at what the large public providers actually publish.

Provider positions and published fees were read directly from each provider page on 21 September 2026. Fees move, so confirm before you budget.

Every one of these is an apprenticeship pathway, which means you attend one day a week and spend the other four working for an employer who has signed a training contract with you. The barrier to enrolling is not academic; it is employment, and that is why a student visa holder cannot get through it.

A Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical) apprenticeship is a good route into this trade if you are a citizen or a permanent resident. It is closed to most people on a student visa, and no amount of asking will change a provider’s CRICOS position. If a provider advertises a cert 3 in engineering mechanical trade and does not state a CRICOS code, assume it is an apprenticeship place.

Where International Students Can Actually Study It

A smaller group of private registered training organisations delivers MEM30219 as a full-time CRICOS-registered course with workshop hours instead of an employer contract. Indicative figures from that group sit around AUD 18,000 in tuition over roughly 107 weeks, with campuses in Brisbane and Sydney.

Run two checks before you pay anyone a deposit.

1. Check the course, not just the provider, on the CRICOS register. A provider can be CRICOS-registered while a particular course is not. Search the specific course code on the CRICOS register.
2. Confirm the RTO on training.gov.au and ask which elective units they deliver, in writing. Ask for the unit codes and the point values, not a marketing summary. Check them against the Release 3 packaging rules.

That second check is the one people skip. A provider that delivers the cheapest elective bank can leave you holding a qualification that does not line up with the occupation you intended to be assessed in. The Occupations MEM30219 Maps To

This is the part no provider page mentions. Trades Recognition Australia publishes a schedule linking Australian qualifications to ANZSCO occupations, and eight of them sit against this one.

From the TRA qualification to occupation schedule. Confirm your own code against the current version before you commit.

Fitter (General) 323211 sits on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List at ANZSCO skill level 3, which is what opens the subclass 189, 190 and 491. It is also reported as in shortage across every state and territory.

Do not assume the other seven sit in the same position. Home Affairs sets list placement per occupation, and it moves. Check each one on the skilled occupation list on the day you make your decision, not on the day you read an article about it.

If you are searching for a mechanical fitter course, a mechanical fitter certificate or a cert 3 mechanical trade, this qualification is the one you are looking for. The course is named after the training package. The job is named after the electives.

Who Assesses You: TRA or VETASSESS

Both bodies operate in this space, and the split decides your timeline.

Trades Recognition Australia runs the Job Ready Program. This is the route for an international student who qualifies for Australia. It runs in four stages, and the thresholds are hours, not months.

• Provisional Skills Assessment, AUD 130. This verifies your qualification and your 360 hours of vocational placement, and it is the stage most people mean when they say registration.
• Job Ready Employment, AUD 490. Paid work in your nominated trade at award wages for a minimum of twelve months.
• Job Ready Workplace Assessment, AUD 2,845. Available once you reach 863 hours over at least six months. An assessor visits your workplace.
• Job Ready Final Assessment, AUD 75. Available after 1,725 hours over at least twelve calendar months.

VETASSESS assesses the same trade occupations through two different pathways. Pathway 1 is for applicants without an Australian qualification, and Pathway 2 is for applicants who hold one. Which one applies to you comes down to where your experience sits. If you have just finished MEM30219 in Australia and have no substantial overseas trade history behind you, the Job Ready Program is normally your route, because it builds the Australian work history the assessment needs. What the Pathway Looks Like After the Qualification

The pathway runs in five stages, in this order.

3. Subclass 500. You study the CRICOS-registered course full-time. Work rights are 48 hours per fortnight while the course is in session and unlimited during scheduled breaks. Hours you work in your own trade can count toward your later TRA total if you document them properly from the start.
4. Subclass 485. After graduating, you apply for the Temporary Graduate visa, which gives you full work rights to complete the Job Ready Program. The application charge rose to AUD 5,750 on 1 July 2026.
5. Job Ready Program. Fifteen to eighteen months, and it normally runs while you hold the 485 rather than after it. Finding an employer who will pay award wages, keep your logbooks, and host an assessor is the hardest part of the entire pathway, so plan it before you enrol rather than after you graduate.

Course to permanent residency realistically runs four to seven years. Two years of study, then the Job Ready Program at fifteen to eighteen months, which normally runs while you hold the 485 rather than after it, then the invitation and processing on top. The four-year end assumes the Job Ready Program overlaps your 485 and your occupation is being invited. The seven-year end assumes it does not.

Get the Occupation Right Before You Get the Course

The expensive mistake on this pathway is not choosing the wrong provider. It is reaching 96 points through a set of electives that does not line up with the occupation you intended to be assessed in.
