Temporary Graduate Visa – Graduate work stream

This visa allows recent overseas graduates who have completed 92 CRICOS weeks of vocational education to live, study and work in Australia. The purpose of granting this visa is to meet the Australian business needs with the relevant skills and qualifications of the applicants. Occupation of the applicant must be listed on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).

 

A Graduate Work Stream 485 is for international students who’re recently graduated with skills and qualifications relevant to occupations that Australia needs. It allows you to live and work in Australia for more than 18 months. You can also add your family members to your application for 485 Visa Australia.

 

Processing Time

The Department of Home Affairs processes all applications for Temporary Graduate Visa 485. It takes:

  • 9 months to process 25% of applications
  • 9 months to finalize 50% of applications
  • 10 months to process 75% of applications
  • 12 months to process 90% of applications

Eligibility

To obtain a Temporary Graduate Visa 485, you must:

  • Have held a Student Visa 500 in the previous 6 months before applying for visa 485
  • Under 50 years of age
  • Meet the Australian Study Requirement
  • Have qualification and experience that Australia requires
  • Have adequate health insurance for your stay in Australia
  • Meet health and character requirements
  • Sign the Australian Values Statement to acknowledge your commitment to respecting Australian laws
  • Not owe the Australian Government any money
  • Not have had a visa application refused before applying for visa 485
  • Provide proof of the required English language level with the visa application
  • Have a required qualification relevant to the occupation on the Skilled Occupation List
  • Have applied for a skills assessment for your nominated occupation on the Skilled Occupation List

Cost

Temporary Graduate Visa costs AUD 1,680 for main applicants. There’re separate charges for each family member who applies with you.

Stay Period

A Temporary Graduate Visa is a temporary visa. You can stay for up to 18 months with a 485 visa in Australia. However, the stay period has been temporarily increased to 24 months for visas granted from December 1, 2021.

 

At the same time, British National Overseas and Hong Kong passport holders may stay for 5 years in Australia.

This visa allows recent overseas graduates who have completed 92 CRICOS weeks of higher education degree to live, study and work in Australia. This is a temporary visa stream that allows the applicant to stay usually for 2 to 4 years.

 

In conclusion, applicants who have completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree can stay for 2 years, and those who have completed master’s by research or Ph.D. can stay for 3 & 4 years respectively.

 

A Post-Study Work Stream is for overseas students who recently graduated from an Australian institution. With this visa stream, you can live, work and study in Australia for a short period.

Processing Time

The Department of Home Affairs takes a few months to process post-study work stream applications. It takes:

  • 9 months to process 25% of applications
  • 10 months to process 50% of applications
  • 10 months to process 75% of applications
  • 11 months to process 90% of applications

Eligibility

If you want to get a Post-Study Work Stream 485, you must:

 

  • Be under 50 years of age
  • Have been granted or have lodged an application for your first Student Visa on or after the 5th of November 2011
  • Be an eligible visa holder
  • Held a Student Visa 500 within the past six months
  • Hold an eligible degree in a CRICOS-registered course
  • Have evidence of your adequate health insurance
  • Provide proof that you’ve applied for AFP check
  • Submit evidence of the required level of English along with your application
  • Meet the health and character requirements
  • Sign the Australian Values Statement
  • Not owe money/debts to the Government of Australia
  • Not have had a visa application refused before

Cost

Post-Study Work Stream 485 costs around AUD 1,680. If your family member applies with you, they’ll have to pay separately. There might be a cost of biometrics, health checks, and police certificates which you must pay.

Stay Period

Post-Study Work Stream 485 is a temporary visa. It allows you to stay in Australia for 2 to 4 years. The length of your stay will also depend on your course. If you hold a Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport, you can stay for up to 5 years in Australia.

Temporary Graduate Visa – Second Post-Study Work stream

Graduates of an Australian institution located in a regional area who hold a first Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream are eligible for this visa. It allows you to live, work and study in Australia for a short period.

Processing Time

The Department of Home Affairs hasn’t provided the exact processing time for Second Post-Study Work Stream. Though, the processing time varies and depends on the individual circumstances. You must fill your application correctly with complete documents.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Second Post-Study Work Stream 485, you must:

  • Be under the age of 50
  • Be present in Australia while applying for a second post-study work stream.
  • Hold a Temporary Graduate Visa under the post-study work stream as the main applicant
  • Have been graduated from an Australian education institution located in an eligible designated regional area, which led you to grant a Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream.
  • Have resided in the designated regional area of Australia for a minimum of 2 years prior to applying for a second Temporary Graduate visa in the post-study work stream
  • Provide proof of adequate health insurance for your whole stay period in Australia
  • Meet the health and character requirements
  • Sign the Australian Values Statement
  • Not have debts to the Australian Government. If you owe money, you must have arranged to pay it back.

Cost

A Second Post-Study Work Stream costs around AUD 660. Separate charges will be applied to each family member who applies with you. Charges for biometrics, health checks or police certificates might also be applicable.

Stay Period

You can stay for 2 to 4 years in Australia with a Second Post-Study Work Stream. Your stay period in Australia depends on where you studied and graduated from as a Student Visa holder.

It also varies according to the place where you live as a first Temporary Graduate Visa holder in the post-study work stream

New information about 485 visas, July 2022 Updates

From July 1, 2022, people who lost time because of COVID-19 travel restrictions can also apply for a replacement visa, even if they already have a temporary graduate visa.

 

To be eligible, visa holders must: hold a valid temporary graduate visa or have had a temporary graduate visa that expired on or after Feb 1, 2020 and have been outside of Australia (for at least one day) between Feb 1, 2020 and Dec 15, 2021.

Can I Study on 485 Visa?

Yes, you can study on a 485 visa in Australia. A Temporary Graduate Visa 485 is for international students who’re recently graduated in Australia. Visa 485 allows you to live, study and work in Australia for more than 18 months.

After 485 visa expires what to do?

You must have lived in regional Australia for 2 years. Applicants from Sydney, Brisbane, or Melbourne can’t apply to the Post-Study Stream 485.

What is the English Requirement for 485 Visa?

To prove your English language proficiency, you must score:

  • An overall score of 6 is required, with a minimum of 5 for each of the 4 parts in IELTS.
  • In TOEFL, at least 64 points in the total, including 4 points for listening, 4 points for reading, 14 points for writing and 14 points for speaking
  • Score at least 50 overall, with at least 36 score for each part in PTE.
  • At least a B in each of the 4 parts in OET
  • In Cambridge C1 Advanced Test, a score of at least 169 overall, with a score of at least 154 for each of the 4 parts

You don’t need to prove it if you’re from the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New Zealand and the Republic of Ireland.

Do We Need to Fill Form 80 for 485 Visa?

Form 80 is not crucial for visa 485 application. However, it’ll provide additional information to Home Affairs about you, which can make it easier for you to apply for future visas. If the Department of Home Affairs asks for a form 80, it’ll be mandatory for you to submit it.
