Fairer Visa Processing System in Australia | Labor MP Julian Hill

Julian Hill, the Labor member for Bruce, says that the current government is discriminating against some countries with Partner Visas. He has accused the Liberal government of “shameful” discrimination in Partner Visa processing and “breaking promises” about Parent Visas for migrants. He supports the fairer visa processing system for Partner and Parent Visas for migrants.

 

Comments by Mr. Julian Hill on Visa Processing Time

Mr. Julian Hill made the remarks during a recent interview with SBS Hindi at the SBS Election Exchange. The event took place at the Dandenong Market in Victoria.

 

Mr. Hill stated that:

If you are from the United States, Germany or Western Europe it takes five to seven months to get a partner visa for your wife or husband, if you are from somewhere like India it takes a lot longer than that and indeed if you are from parts of the Middle East it takes four years on average, that’s discrimination.

 

According to him:

Labor abolished the White Australia Policy in the 1970s laying the foundations for multicultural Australia we see today, and we are committed to a fairer visa processing system.

Partner Visa Processing System

The Department of Immigration and Citizenship revealed that the number of on-hand Partner Visa applications decreased by 41% in the past 18 months. Consequently, processing times for many Partner Visa applications have been reduced.

 

52.1% of finalized applications were lodged within the previous 12 months on 31 March 2022, compared to 26.5% at the same point in 2019-20. According to their figures, 90% of Partner Visas were approved between 5 to 29 months.

 

New Contributory Parent Visa Processing Time

The department estimates that new Contributory Parent Visa applications that meet the criteria to be queued will probably take at least 65 months to be finalized. Applications for new Parent and Aged Parent Visas that meet the criteria to be queued are likely to take at least 30 years to process.

 

According to Mr. Julian Hill, Labor is aware of the ongoing complaints regarding the Parent and Partner visas. These complaints are often about high fees and long waits. He acknowledges that the Labor Party needs to address these issues.

 

New Contributory Parent Visa applications that meet the criteria to be queued will take at least 65 months, while applications for new Parent and Aged Parent Visas that meet the criteria to be queued will take at least 30 years to be finalized .  

 

Scott Morrison on Fairer Visa Processing System

Prime Minister, Scott Morrison has also addressed the topic of Parent Visa options in a recent interview with SBS Radio. He emphasized the importance of family reunions in Australia. Mr. Scott Morrison said that the introduction of the Sponsored Temporary Parent Visa was a “very important change” that the Liberal Party had delivered.

 

According to Scott Morrison:

As a government we have always shown a great deal of commitment and innovation to see how we can bring families back together.

 

Political Background of Mr. Julian Hill

In 2016, Mr. Hill was elected to the House of Representatives for Bruce, Victoria. He was re-elected in 2019. He has been a member of the Australian Labor Party since 1993. Further, Mr. Julian Hill is also a president of the Australian Labor Party local branch.

 

Bruce now covers 115 square kilometers after a redistribution in 2021. As a result of redistribution in 2021, the seat of Bruce now covers 115 square kilometers, including suburbs from Mulgrave to Berwick.

 

Since 1996, Bruce has been a safe Labor seat.  It is yet to be seen whether the latest change of boundaries will impact Mr. Hill’s chances of victory.

 

Mr. Julian Hill stated:

About 80 per cent of my electorate wasn’t there in 2016 so I have got a whole new bunch of people to introduce myself to.
