According to David Elliot, Member of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales, it’s a great opportunity for people to save money. Following weeks of tension between the state government and rail union over wages and working conditions, the trains were shut down for 24 hours last month. So, free public transport will be offered to help people save their money.

  • The public transport in Greater Sydney will be free for 12 days. It’ll begin on the 14th of April 2022.
  • Free public transport will include buses, trains and ferries.

 

David Elliot on Free Public Transport in Sydney

Transport Minister of New South Wales (NSW), David Elliot, has given his statements on free public transport for Sydney commuters for 12 days.

 

He stated:

The move was not just a union versus Transport for NSW initiative.

We need to stimulate economic activity and Business Sydney were advocating in favour of these fare free days as a means to get people into the city, into Parramatta. 

The free transport would be available from Newcastle to the Blue Mountains to the South Coast. 

 

Buses, ferries and trains will be included in the free public transport during the Easter holidays. Though, private ferries, the airport line and Point to Point bus service aren’t included for free transportation. Mr. David Elliot said that it’s a “wonderful opportunity for families to save money.”

 

Public transportation will be free during the school holidays in Sydney. It’ll include other events such as the Royal Easter Show and NRL matches as well. The Transport Minister, David Elliot, revealed that he had spoken to the union regarding free travel. According to him, it would set aside its threat of further industrial action as a gesture of good faith.

NSW Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU)

The NSW Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) previously said that it would use industrial action to force the state government to offer free fares to travelers every Friday until June 2022. RTBU secretary, Alex Claassens, this move was a result of the government’s decision last month. As it ordered to shut down the train system without warning and leaving thousands of travelers stranded.

 

The union also confirmed that industrial action plans would be the same as those taken in the lead-up to the February 21 shutdown, when Transport NSW decided at the eleventh hour to stop operations throughout the entire system due to safety concerns.

 

David Elliott says that the 12-day free travel period was offered to compensate travelers for the disturbances on the rail network.

The shutdown of the network last month was something that needed to be compensated.
