Travel Conditions in Covid-19 for Australians

As we know travel restrictions in Australia are still not lifted due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Even if you’re an Australian or permanent resident you can’t travel from Australia. However, there’s a possibility that if you’ve got an individual exemption from the Government then you’ll be allowed to travel.

 

You can submit an application along with evidence and documentation to get an exemption from the Government. Although, there are some conditions under which you can apply for the individual exemption.

 

They’re:

  • You’re traveling for the national interest.
  • You’ll be providing aid for the Covid-19 pandemic
  • Your travel is as part of the response to Covid-19.
  • You need to travel for a business purpose.
  • You’ve compassionate and compelling reasons to travel.
  • You’re traveling to get the medical treatment that isn’t available in Australia.
  • You’re leaving for more than three months due to some compelling reasons.

Evidence to Support Request for Exemption

The Government needs proof and valid reasons to issue the exemption. Therefore, you need to provide evidence that should support your claims to travel. Moreover, your application for exemption will be rejected in case of invalid reasons or insufficient evidence.

 

You’re supposed to provide the evidence which includes:

  • Passport/s
  • Marriage certificate/s
  • Birth certificate/s
  • Death certificate/s
  • The evidence of relationships such as shared tenancy agreement and joint bank account, etc.
  • The evidence that you’re traveling for more than three months for leases or job offers
  • The proof that your goods are being transported
  • The evidence of your current valid visa including in Australia and/or overseas
  • An official letter from a hospital or doctor about your medical treatment or health condition with statements that why you’re traveling is important
  • An official letter with a statement that should claim that you’re traveling for a business purpose
  • A proof or statement about your return to Australia
  • Submission of any other pieces of evidence that support your claims

Travel for Three Months or More

If you need an exemption from Australia’s outbound travel restrictions to travel for three months or more than that then you’re supposed to submit the evidence. There must be compelling reasons along with evidence to support your application and get the exemption.

 

The evidence must include:

  • The confirmation of your flight schedule along with the return date of at least three months after the date of departure
  • Confirmation of leave approval from employment for three months
  • The confirmation of enrollment for the study
  • You must have a doctor’s certificate that should verify that you’re traveling to provide medical aid
  • You can add any other evidence that could make your exemption application valid

No False Statements

Make sure you don’t submit any false statements as a person who makes wrong statements to get exemption will be guilty of an offense under section 11 of the Statutory Declarations Act 1959. Moreover, you’ll not get the exemption either.

 

Your application and evidence should be translated into English before submission. Further, you must apply for the exemption two weeks before traveling. Usually, requests for the travel exemption get finalized within 48 hours. However, applications with insufficient evidence might get delayed or disapproved.

  • Engaged in the daily conduct of inbound and outbound freight
  • Traveling in association with important work at an offshore facility in Australian waters
  • Traveling on official government business such as if you’re a member of the Australian Defence Force or an Australian Government official traveling on a diplomatic or official passport
  • If you’re traveling directly to New Zealand or you’ve been in Australia or New Zealand for 14 days or more immediately before your travel date

 

Ordinarily Resident

If you’ve spent more than 24 months in a country other than Australia then you’re considered as an ordinarily resident of that specific country. You don’t need to take documents with you as it’s not necessary. Though if documents will be required then the Australian Border Force Officers will check your travel history in their systems.

 

You can always request an assessment if you’ve any doubt regarding the ordinarily resident information. The request should be submitted two weeks before your departure date.

APEC Business Travel Card

You can’t get the exemption if you hold the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travel Card (ABTC). You have to apply for the exemption along with the evidence to support your application.
