What are the Subclass 485 Visa New Rules?

Recently some new rules have been made in subclass 485. These changes have been confusing people a lot and are creating a sense of chaos for many. This is because it is been misinterpreted by many. We will try to simplify these rules for you so that they can be made more comprehensive for everyone.

These new rules as follow:

  • The first rule is that. If you have been a holder of subclass 485 postgraduate streams as the main applicant or as a secondary applicant, then you cannot apply for subclass 485 postgraduate streams as the main applicant again.
  • Secondly, if you have been a holder of subclass 485 post-study work stream then you cannot apply for subclass 485 post-graduate workstream again.
  • And thirdly, if you have been the holder of the post-study workstream as a secondary applicant twice then you cannot apply as the applicant for subclass 485 post-study workstream.

Temporary Graduate Visa subclass 485 and its different streams

Temporary Graduate Visa 485 allows an international student who has recently got a degree from a registered Australian institute can study and work in Australia. This visa allows you to stay in Australia temporarily and the time granted is dependent on the stream of visa the applicant is applying.

Graduate workstream

The graduate work stream allows the international graduate who has recently completed at least 92 CRICOS weeks of vocational education from an authentic Australian institution to work and study in Australia for up to 18 months. To get this visa one must belong to a profession that is present in the short or medium-term occupational list

The eligibility criteria of graduate workstream:

  • The age of the applicant must be less than 50 years.
  • Should have done at least 92 CRICOS weeks for vocational training from an Australian institution
  • The occupation of the applicant should be in the medium or long-term occupational list
  • Must have taken and passed an English proficiency test
  • should fulfill all health and character criteria

Post-study Workstream

This visa is for international graduates from an Australian institution who has completed at least 92 CRICOS weeks of higher studies to live, work and study in Australia. Students who have completed bachelors or masters degrees can stay up to 2 years while the students who have done masters by research and PhD can stay up to 3-4 years respectively.

The eligibility criteria of this visa stream

  • The age of the applicant must be less than 50 years.
  • Should have degree comprising of at least 92 CRICOS weeks for higher education from an Australian institution
  • The occupation of the applicant should be in the medium or long-term occupational list
  • Must have taken and passed an English proficiency test
  • should fulfil all health and character criteria
