From April 23, 2024, the Vetassess will implement significant changes in the Vetassess skill assessment process for trade occupations. All the skill assessment applications lodged after this date will be assessed according to the new rules and guidelines.
Candidates planning to migrate to Australia via a skilled migration program or employer-sponsored scheme know they need a positive skill assessment to get visa approval. They must demonstrate the skills relevant to their occupation to secure a spot in Australia.
These skills are assessed by different organizations in Australia. One of these organizations is Vetassess Skills Assessment Body. Vetassess is the largest skills-assessing body present in Australia, and it assesses hundreds of trade occupations. Recently, the Vetassess has introduced major changes in the Vetassess skill assessment process for trade occupations under Pathway 1. Let’s understand these changes:
Latest Changes in Vetassess Skill Assessment for Trade Occupations
The skill assessment process for Pathway 1 has been divided into two major stages by the Vetassess. Here is a summary of the key changes the Vetassess will implement on April 23, 2024.
- In stage 1 of the changes, Vetassess will accept the skill assessment application fee only when you provide the decision-ready documents.
- In stage 2 of the changes, the process is divided into three further categories, which are:
- Creating a video demonstrating the skills relevant to trade occupation of the candidate according to the guidelines.
- Completing the Australian Industry Standards online assessment within the provided time period.
- Attending the technical interview process, which can be conducted either online or in designated places.
Let’s discuss these changes in the Vetasses skill assessment in detail:
Pathway 1 of Vetassess Skill Assessment
Stage 1: Changes to the Application Process
In the first stage of Pathway 1, candidates submit their documents to the Vetassess, who reviews the necessary information and documents you have provided. The Vetassess will make sure that you have provided enough documentation and that your application is ready for assessment. If you provide incomplete information or documents, they will inform you to make your documents decision-ready.
The Vetassess will only ask you to pay the assessment fee when your documents are decision-ready. Previously, candidates would submit the assessment fee along with the application and documents and if the assessing body found that the application was not decision-ready, they would not inform the candidates, making it challenging for candidates.
So, the purpose of introducing this major change is to facilitate the process for the applicants.

Stage 2: Changes in the Assessment Process for Trade Occupations
The Vetassess is also going to change the assessment process for Pathway 1 for trade occupations. All trade occupations except four—air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics, electrician (general), electrician (special class), and plumber (general)—will be subject to these changes.
The assessment process will be divided into three steps. Below is the detail of each step for skill assessment in 2024:
Step 1: Video Evidence for Skills Assessment
In stage 2 of the skills assessment process, the Vetassess will ask you to provide them with a collection of videos highlighting your skills related to your trade occupation. Remember, create videos according to the instructions and guidelines related to your specific trade occupation.
You can also access the guidelines on the official website of Vetassess. If the assessor finds your video is not following the given instructions, he will ask you to resend it. You can only move on to the next stage once the assessor is satisfied with the video.
Step 2: Australian Industry Standards Online Test for Skills Assessment
Step 2 of Stage 2 indicates an online assessment of Australian Industry Standards. For this purpose, you must first complete the online course about Australian Industry Standards relevant to your trade occupation. The Vetassess authority will provide you with the username and password to complete the assessment.
Then, you will be asked to complete the online assessment of your comprehension of these requirements. The assessment will be live for seven days, and you can repeat the courses if necessary.
Step 3: Technical Interview for Skills Assessment
After completing the online assessment, the Vetassess will schedule a technical interview for you. The technical interview will be conducted either online or in person. In the case of in-person interviews, candidates are required to go to the designated places of the Vetassess and demonstrate their skills in the presence of an assessor. The interview will take approximately two hours.
Concluding Thoughts
By now, you have reviewed the changes in Vetassess skill assessment including the changes in assessment application lodgement and processing. The purpose of introducing all these major changes in Vetassess skill assessment for trade occupations in 2024 is to simplify and facilitate the candidates’ skills assessment process. Skill assessments that used to take decades will now be assessed within days. So, there is no need to worry about the processing times from now on.
