Australia Study Visa Application: Detailed Process for Students

Studying for a Visa Application can be a walk in the park, but only if you have the right guidance. Here are easy steps to Australia study visa applications.

1. Pre-Application Process

Pre-emptive planning is key to a successful Australia study visa application. If you’re outside Australia, ensure you initiate the visa application process at least 8 weeks before your course commencement date. For those already in Australia, it’s wise to start early as well.

Avoid waiting until the last day of your current substantive visa’s expiration. Unforeseen complications may arise, and you may not always get quick assistance. Additionally, organize any required health exams, which can be completed before applying.

Ensure your passport is valid, both for yourself and your family members, as it’s a prerequisite for lodging a student visa application. If your current passport in Australia is expiring, remember to renew it before applying for your student visa.

2. Gathering your documents

The Department of Home Affairs issues a Document Checklist Tool to help you guide through the process. Please note that this document checklist tool is updated twice every year. Before submitting your application, make sure you have added all the required documents.

Here is a brief checklist of everything you need to provide the authorities.

  1. Proof of Identity
  2. Confirmation of your enrollment to the University
  3. Evidence that you can provide for yourself while studying in Australia
  4. Overseas Student Health Cover
  5. Proof of student visa English Competency test

3. Applying for the Visa

You must apply for this visa online. There is no restriction on where you are when you apply for the visa. You can be inside or outside Australia. Applications that are lodged without relevant documentation may be refused or delayed. The application form in ImmiAccount tells you what documents you need to attach. Do not provide false and misleading information.

Apply online by following these steps:

  • Create or log in to ImmiAccount
  • Attach documents
  • Pay the visa application charge

4. After your Application

Stay proactive after submitting your Australia study visa application. Respond promptly to any requests for information and don’t wait until the deadline. Regularly check your ImmiAccounts for messages from the Department and respond promptly.

It’s advisable to refrain from booking travel until your visa is finalized. For status updates, please avoid calling if it’s within standard processing times, as we cannot provide additional progress updates. You can review any information requests in your ImmiAccount.

While you wait for your visa outcome, abide by these conditions:

  • Staying Lawful
  • Adding Family Members (if any)
  • Identifying and Informing us of any mistakes in your application
  • Providing more information
  • Taking any necessary health exams

5. Waiting For Your Australia Study Visa Outcome

Once your Australia study visa is processed, the Department will inform you about the outcome of your visa. They will let you know:

If they accept your visa
  • The date of your visa expiry
  • The visa grant number
  • Any visa conditions you have to abide by
If they reject your visa
  • The Department will inform you why your visa was rejected.
  • Whether you have the option to review your visa application

Please note that the Department does not refund the visa application fee if your visa is rejected.
