Increased Migration Cap 2022 – Essential Updates for Workers!

The latest news about the increased migration cap in Australia has just been in. The Australian government plans to increase the annual migration intake by 35,000 places. An effort will be made to reduce the visa backlog, the government will invest $36 million.

 

It came on the 2nd day of the Jobs and Skills Summit of the government. The Jobs and Skills Summit was heavily focused on concerns about labour shortage in Australia. It has also focused on the opportunities for migrant workers, affected by the pandemic, to fill the required positions in Australia.

 

According to Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, things have gotten worse. As the dependency on workers with temporary visas had put the labor force more at risk. Further, there was a general agreement on the need to establish more permanent migration pathways for workers.

 

Minister of Home Affairs, Clare O’Neil, made a formal announcement that the migration cap will rise from 160,00 to 195,000 in Australia. According to Ms. O’Neil, Labor is focusing on permanent immigration, citizenship, and nation-building rather than short-term migration.

The goal is to change the workforce structure. It should consist of permanent migrant workers instead of temporary workers. For this purpose, the government will give temporary workers the opportunity to stay longer or transition to permanent status.

 

As a result of this policy, international students will be able to work in Australia for longer after graduating from an Australian university. Restrictions for Temporary Visa Holders!

The restriction on temporary working visa holders has also been eased. They will be allowed to work in Australia for an extended period. Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has committed $36 million to help improve visa processing resources for those who are awaiting their visas or have loved ones who are awaiting.

 

According to Andrew Giles, there’re currently 900,000 visa backlogs. However, the government’s repair work is well in progress to clear the pending applications. He believes that since Labor won the federal election, visa processing times have been significantly reduced.

 

Mr. Andrew Giles stated:

The median number of days it takes for a person coming to Australia on a temporary skilled visa is down, from 53 days in May, to 42 days in July.

 

And the median time taken to approve new businesses for sponsorship has halved, from 37 days to 18.

 

He further added:

Staff are working “regular overtime” to process visas and the new investment will “surge staff capacity by 500 people for the next nine months”.

 

How soon will it come into effect?

The increased migration cap is an upgrade to the financial year 2022-23. It will come into effect hopefully soon. The October budget papers will include a larger investment in visa processing resources.

According to the Migrant Workers Centre, as the government plans to increase migrant worker numbers in Australia, the working conditions and rights of migrant workers should be taken into account as well. In some cases, temporary visas have led to migrants being exploited, according to Matt Kunkel, CEO of the center.

 

Matt Kunkel said:

For too long, Australia’s temporary migration system has condemned migrants to living in limbo, in an endless cycle of temporary visas with limited workplace protections.

 

In his opinion, migrant workers should feel comfortable speaking out against unjust conditions.

 

He stated:

All workers must feel confident to raise issues of workplace exploitation. Whistle-blower protections are essential to ensure migrants are not forced to choose between defending their workplace rights and their ability to remain in the country.

 

Our migration system is more than just adjusting intake numbers. We must centre and support the people coming to our shores and provide the certainty to build their lives and be full partners in our communities.
